According to the results of a recent survey, nearly one-quarter (24 per cent) of UK men who are planning on taking a winter sports trip over the forthcoming year will not take out any travel insurance for their holiday. Only eight per cent of women said the same.
The research, commissioned by travel tech provider Aquarium Software and carried out by YouGov, took in responses from 2,000 British adults who are planning a winter sports holiday. And while one could reasonably look at the figures another way – 76 per cent of respondents hopefully will take out cover – the fact that a notable proportion of men planning on taking a holiday involving specific, potentially dangerous sports will do so uninsured is undoubtedly concerning.
Additionally, the survey found that 11 per cent of Brits (of all genders) planning a winter sports trip ‘don’t know’ if they will take out cover – although at least with these, there could be potential for them to be persuaded.
“These findings reveal a worrying, cavalier attitude among men when it comes to safety on the slopes,” warned Mark Colonnese, Director of Aquarium Software. “It is high time they covered up. This comes despite the fact that 70 per cent of men who have been or plan to go on a winter sports holiday are well aware they may not be covered for specific activities unless they have declared them – but for some, the plan seems to be not to bother with cover anyway. Given the high number of well publicised incidents, this gap between genuine risk and adequate insurance cover is an accident waiting to happen.”
Some of the most common winter sports injuries include knee injuries (particularly of the anterior cruciate ligament, for example when skiing), shoulder dislocations (for example to the rotator cuff when using one’s arms to break a fall) and concussions.
