Driving licence renewal changes in Portugal

By January 4, 2017September 11th, 2021No Comments

From 2 January 2017 renewing the Portuguese driving licence has become easier.

Portuguese driving licences no longer display the holder’s address so you don’t have to renew your driving licence if you move house.  The new address now only needs to be updated in the cartão do cidadão (ID card).

The validity of the driving licence for people up to 60 years old has been extend from 10 to 15 years.

If you renew the driving licence online you will get a 10% discount.

From April 2017 it won’t be necessary to obtain a medical declaration when renewing the driving licence. This is due to the ‘Simplex System’ that the Portuguese Government is gradually developing to simplify all the bureaucratic paper work and so the IMT (Intituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes) will be linked to the Health Ministry and have access to medical reports.
